We are African students and researchers at Ghent University. Where African scholars connect, belong, and grow.
A few hundred of us are here, and most of us have never met each other.
We help each other settle in: where to find a room, how the paperwork works, which funding is open and when it closes. And we get together properly a few times a year, so that the people you write to are people you have met.

Who we are
An association for us, run by us
GU-ASRA is the African Students and Researchers Association at Ghent University. Nobody organises it on our behalf, and nobody has to ask permission to belong to it.
We are bachelor's students, master's students, PhD researchers, postdocs and staff. We come from across the African continent, and some of us are here because our work is about it. You will find us in all eleven faculties at Ghent.
We are here for one another, in whatever comes up.
Before now
Ten events in one year
These photographs are from 2019. The African Students Association ran ten events at Ghent that year: bowling, a disco night, an Easter gathering, a cultural evening, a day at the beach in Ostend, elections, a welcome day, a graduation party, a dinner, and a trip to Liege. We are continuing it.
